Nowadays, refrigerators do just about everything but cook dinner for you. Of course our refrigerator repair pros know that it wasn’t always that way. It literally took centuries to develop the smart, stylish appliances of today. Here’s a look at several famous inventors who helped the process along:
Jacob Perkins
Before the summer of 1835, people all across the world relied on ice and Mother Nature to keep things cold. One of the men who helped change all of that was Jacob Perkins. A Massachusetts native, he came up with a vapor-compression refrigerator. Widely considered to be the world’s first, it would help pave the way for further advancements.
Dr. John Gorrie
One of the next big ones took place in the late spring of 1851. At that time, a Florida physician came up with an ice maker. It was a modern marvel that would later be expanded upon and spawn the creation of built-in ice makers. The man’s name was Dr. John Gorrie.
Thomas Midgley Junior
By the time 1889 rolled around, refrigerators were undergoing yet another transformation. This time, it came courtesy of two men. Their names were Thomas Midgley Junior and Charles F. Kettering. Together, they helped create Freon, which only kept the cool innovations coming.
Christian Steenstrup
Subsequently, the world was introduced to the first all-steel, hermetically sealed refrigerator in 1927. It came from the mind of a Danish man by the name of Christian Steenstrup. His invention was named after a Civil War ship and sold under the General Electric brand name.
Lillian Moller Gilbreth
Last on our list is Lillian Moller Gilbreth. Known nationally as the “Mother of Modern Management”, she was responsible for adding shelves and door inserts to the refrigerators of her day. She’s also noted as being the brains behind the L-shaped kitchen work space layout. Gilbreth’s inventions took place throughout the 1900s.
